Here's Why You Should Make Your Stylist Your Best Friend

When I was in beauty school I got the worst haircut of my life (sorry no pictures). The worst part? It wasn’t by a student.  When asked if anyone was interested in becoming a model for a hair show, (as anyone that knows me knows) I was the first to raise my hand.  So, long story short I ended up with 1 inch bangs on a pretty high forehead that were referred to, to this day, as my "baby bangs".

The "baby bangs" have grown out, but I learned a lot from that traumatizing experience.  I'm pretty sure the guy that cut my hair was on some serious drugs, but I'm also to blame for not speaking up.

Communication is so important in every relationship.  Especially the one with your stylist.  I mean, when you really think about it we help you be your best you.  Hairstylists that are passionate about their craft can talk for hours about hair, and sometimes that can be a language foreign to most.  So, to help you communicate better with your stylist here are a few helpful tips for anyone looking to change up their style.

* Layers are everyone's friend -
   Layers add volume and movement to every hair type and curly hair bounces up and takes a more flattering shape when layers are added.  A few things to remember:  There is never a number of layers - it should all blend together.  Oh, and you would be surprised how many people ask for short on top and long in the back and don’t realize that's a mullet.

*Bobs never go out of style -
  For years the hair industry has recreated the bob that is short in the back and long in the front. There have been many names for it - a-line bob, inverted bob, stacked bob - but no matter what you call it is fun and polished and can make fine hair feel thinner and give thin hair some structure.  I'm even a fan of this style curly (reminds me of my sassy beauty school teacher).  Straight chin length bobs and shoulder length bobs (aka lob) can have shorter layers or long layers to make it look blunt.  You can still do so much with this style - pull it half back, flat iron, curl - and change the whole look of the cut.

*Pixies are for the brave -
  A guy once told me that short hair is a sign of confidence. I have not yet had the confidence to cut my hair quite that short, but that's because I'm not a patient person and when I'm ready to grow it out I will lose my mind.  With all that being said, I admire a girl who can rock out a pixie cut!  You can wear it messy or sleek. You can cut around the ears or even go asymmetrical (one side longer than the other). Right now Jennifer Lawrence and Kaley Cuoco have my favorite pixie cuts!

*Bangs and shorter layers in the front are a great way to change your style without losing your length -
   Straight bangs or side bangs can really change the shape of your face.  But beware, they are a commitment, so if you don't do a lot to your hair in the morning you are going to have to take the time to style those bangs.  Angles in the front are a great way to lighten the front of the hair so it's not just lying flat. This also gives you a chance to curl those layers back to have that modern Farrah faucet look that is in style for good reason!

So these are just a few terms and ideas for any of you thinking about trying something new but having a hard time communicating what you really want.  Don't be afraid to ask questions or bring pictures!  Most importantly, find a stylist you truly trust.  We take pride in getting to know our clients and understanding their hair.  We ask questions to make sure your maintenance level and hair type will achieve your goal.  In the end when we make you look good, it makes us look good!

Enjoy the process and stay fabulous,

Xoxo Michelle
